OVERVIEW
The unforgettable
During the winter months, a large number of humpback whales migrate from the west coast of Canada to the Mexican Pacific coast of Mexico. Between December and March, they make their spectacular appearances in the Banderas Bay. Being able to watch this extraordinary spectacle upclose is a humbling and emotional experience you definitely don’t want to miss when visiting the Nayarit coast.
The natural shape of the bay provides protection for the mothers and their calves, with hundreds of Humpbacks arriving in the area every year you will witness endless breaching, singing, courting and tail flapping; a lifetime experience you will forever remember.
What to Expect
Close encounters in safety
Being protected by law, every human approach to the whales is regulated by strict rules and regulations to guarantee the safety of both humans and mammals.
Despite their huge size however, humpbacks are very playful and curious; they usually approach boats closer, reason why a trained and conscious captain is fundamental for a safe yet fun adventure.
Starting in December through the end of March whale sightseeings are a considerable part of our Marietas eco discovery adventures. For those interested in a whale watching experience only, we can set a customized excursion upon request.
Whale watching on the way to Marietas
During the winter months the bay is filled with hundreds of whales, making it very easy to spot them on our boat ride to the islands. This 3 hour excursion is the perfect balance between 2 incredible experiences; a whale encounter and a snorkel adventure in the marine park of Marietas Islands. Once the first part of whale sightseeing is over, the group will move towards the islands and visit this protected marine reserve and UNESCO area. After some snorkeling and a beach drop off (The Hidden Beach visit can be added at extra cost), we will end the excursion with some more whale watching on the way back to shore.
The excursion will start at the dive center in Sayulita. Here we will fit you for snorkeling equipment and drive you to Punta de Mita where the boat is located. A total of 3 hours in the ocean, you will be driven back to Sayulita after that.
Returning to Sayulita
Back in Sayulita we will take you for lunch at our local favorite in town, what a better way to reminisce about such an amazing day!
