OVERVIEW

The story behind its beauty

In the late 60s, a group of international scientists led by Jacques Cousteau started a battle to have Marietas Islands protected by human activities. Thanks to the international attention brought to it, years after in 2005 the mexican government finally decided to proclaim the islands a Marine National Park.

Now a recognized UNESCO site, the islands were originally a military training zone, used by the mexican army as a bomb testing location.

Cousteau and his colleagues were the first to recognize the islands’ biodiversity, their remarkable flora and fauna down and above the water.

92 different species of birds use the location as feeding and breeding ground, the blue footed boobies the most famous among them.

Biologists counted 115 different kinds of fish inhabiting the islands.

What to Expect

Diving at Marietas

Because of their volcanic origins, the islands feature an amazing series of underwater mountains with several large caves and passages to explore. A different range of dive settings perfect for scuba divers of all levels. During the boat ride to the islands it is not unusual to spot dolphins, turtles and humpback whales (whale season December to March) while at the islands you will find yourself diving with puffers, angelfishes, moorish idols and trumpets just to mention a few.  A quick pick behind the rocks and you will see plenty of moray eels. Here you can swim by big schools of snappers hanging around the rocks and don’t forget to look for the eyes of the many rays hiding under the sand.

A 2 tank dive excursion

Our starting point will be the dive center in Sayulita where the divers will be fitted for equipment. You will be driven to Punta de Mita  and there our 4 hour excursion will start.

20 min is all it takes from Punta de Mita to reach the dive site. Groups will be small for a better customized experience. Our PADI certified instructors leading the dives will make sure to tailor the dives around everyone’s skills.

Returning Sayulita

Once back in Sayulita we will end the day with lunch at our favorite local restaurant in Sayulita.
